Who's your Boss?
Google's number one stress management expert, two-time Something Greater Retreat co-leader and my "sista" in Christ--Lauren Miller is at it again! She has written a new book entitled "STOP Letting the World Be the Boss of You! 25 Solutions to Refresh Your Identity in Christ" and here's what she has to share with us from it:
Stop: is a verb meaning to abandon a specific practice or habit, in this case, to abandon the habit of giving power to the world (people, circumstances, and experiences) to define your worth and value, sense of meaning, and significance. Stop letting the world be the boss of you! You didn’t let your peers in pre-school and kindergarten be the boss of you. When did you start giving your identity away to people, positions, and performance?
Solution: A means of solving a problem.
Refresh: VERB togive new strength or energy to; reinvigorate.
You refresh a URL to restore the connection to its original link resulting in a clear stronger connection.
When we refresh our identity in Christ, we restore our identity to its original link: to God. God is the lover of our souls through Jesus Christ in and through the power of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.
Identity: The fact of being who or what a person or thing is.
Jesus Christ: Lamb of God, Eternal Life, The First and the Last, The Alpha and Omega, the Word of God made flesh, only begotten Son of God, Savior of the world, Lion of Judah, Prince of Peace, the Lord of Glory, just to name a few.
As Paul says in Philippians 3:8, “What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.”
What moved Paul to declare such a radical perspective of life?
Daily life on earth is filled with so many things, shiny objects and trinkets that captivate our time and attention.
What was it exactly that moved Paul to declare EVERYTHING a loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus as his Lord?
Perhaps it was the personal encounter he had on the road to Damascus that lead him to the end of himself and into the realization of his soul’s knowing that when he came to the end of “self” and repented from behavior that compromised his relationship with God, it was then that he encountered the lover of his soul, his heart’s longing was fulfilled in his encounter with Christ which resulted in a resurrected identity, purpose, and passion.
Paul experienced a radical identity resurrection.
How? He first had an encounter with the risen Lord on his way to bully believers in Christ.
Next, Paul fell on his face and declared in the midst of confession Jesus as Lord: “Who are You Lord?”
His identity went from being highly recognized among men to preaching and dying for the gospel message of Christ.
How is this possible?
Radical, unconditional love and identity restoration. The kind of love that makes absolutely no sense from an earthly perspective and results in a resurrected clarity around three questions:
Who am I?
Why am I here?
What will it matter?
God’s radical love for us poured out in the gift of His one and only Son is undeserved and yet freely given —even in spite of negative behavior-- to the one who seeks, opens the door of their heart and asks: “Who are You Lord?”
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me.” (Revelations 3:20).
Remembering “whose” you are in Christ along with the ramifications surrounding that remembrance is the key to your identity refreshment.
The devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8)
Is that someone you? Don’t let it be! Stop letting the World Be the Boss of You!
Dear Lord,
Resurrect within me the remembrance that I have the same spirit that rose you from the grave dwelling within me. Too often I follow the shiny objects of the world and toss my sense of meaning and significance into the lap of the world and I am devoured. Help! Reset, refresh and restore my identity in you so that I can run and not grow weary, walk and not faint and stand firm as your ambassador in the midst of prowling lions.
I ask this in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
